KDIC Inspires University of Nairobi Students on Career Growth and Opportunities in the Financial Sector

The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) participated in the Finance & Investments Students Association (FISA) Breakfast held on 16^th September 2026 at the University of Nairobi School of Business, Lower Kabete Campus. The event brought together students and industry professionals for a session focused on career development, professional growth, financial literacy and the evolving world of work.

The event provided an important platform for students to interact with professionals and gain practical insights beyond the classroom. Among the institutions represented were KDIC, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB), the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society and Britam.

Representing KDIC, Martin Mwai, Assistant Director of Finance took the students through the Corporation's mandate and provided insights into the evolution of the financial sector over time. His presentation helped students appreciate how the financial sector has transformed and continues to evolve in response to technological developments, changing customer needs and emerging business models.

Martin also focused on the qualities that employers look for when recruiting new employees. He noted that while possessing an academic certificate is an important qualification, it is no longer enough on its own because many graduates enter the job market with similar academic credentials. Students were therefore encouraged to develop unique and competitive skills that can distinguish them from other job seekers.

He further highlighted the importance of reliability and dependability in the workplace. Employees are expected to honor their commitments, take responsibility for their work and demonstrate professionalism in their interactions with colleagues and clients.

Soft skills were also identified as essential components of career development. Communication and negotiation skills, among other interpersonal abilities, can enable professionals to work effectively with different people and navigate the demands of the modern workplace.
